1995 French presidential election
Presidential elections were held in France on 23 April, with a second round on 7 May. Following his tenure as Mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac launched his third campaign for the presidency of the French Republic. Campaigning heavily on the theme of healing the country's "social rift", Chirac faced a highly competitive field in the first round of voting, finishing slightly behind the Socialist Party candidate Lionel Jospin.
